about

From Pulse Alternative Magazine

"Brought to you by the same team who produce the rather excellent Private Scandal fanzine ‘WHO KILLED GUMBY?’ is a release of the very first recording of grindcore legends SORE THROAT. Formed in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, in 1987 Sore Throat soon convened in “vocalists” Rich Walker’s bedroom and recorded this super-fine 21 track aural assault that’s been lovingly collected as ‘Who Killed Gumby?’ and it’s supplemented with a rowdy live set from Cardiff, 1988.

I’m sure that to the musically uncouth, the cloth-eared and the untrained ear much grindcore is simply dismissed as ‘noise’ but dig beneath the surface and you’ll find a groove and a swing underpinning proceedings. The dirty bass rumble that introduces opening cut ‘Unrelenting Terror’ immediately stole my heart and if you like the D-beat fuzz of bands like Discharge and Disorder you’ll find a spiritual home in ‘Unrelenting Terror’. The musical equivalent of suspect device it explodes and fractures noise in every direction.

With it’s roots in anarcho-punk grindcore always had a lyrical bent that veered towards anti-capitalism and social justice and Sore Throat deliver the righteous ‘Fear Factory’ and ‘Rapist Die’. If that all sounds a bit heavy the don’t fear because the band also employed brevity to get their message across and lampoon the commercialisation of hardcore with the short but sweet ‘Fungacidal Tendencies’ and the equally brief but brutally bruising ‘Possessed To Rollerskate’.

‘Who Killed Gumby?’ contains plenty of examples of the micro-song: brief furnace blasts of white hot noise that leave the listener scorched in their wake. Even in the late ‘80s it was a busy world out there: you’ve got to hit people then move on. Like the George Orwell of grindcore Sore Throat keep things simple and don’t use two words when one will suffice. But Sore Throat also write some cool longer tunes too and it’s here where they hit pay dirt with the likes of ‘Fuck War’, ‘ICI Fuck Off And Die’ and ‘Communal Grave’ allowing the band to create a feeling of discombobulation.

Closing the disc is a raucous live set recorded in Cardiff in those heady days of 1988. Powered by copious amounts of cider the band blast through a 21 minute live set that opens with the aforementioned ‘ICI Fuck Off And Die’ and then proceeds to pulvarise a willing audience. If you attended an anarcho-punk/grindcore gig in the ‘80s then you’ll recognise this type of set from the flying banter to the rudimentary DIY sound.

Thankfully Sore Throat never reformed (apart from a brief dalliance in 1991) so their moment in time remains frozen and unpolluted. Unlike many of their peers who were sucked up into the system and released some sub-standard metal fare Sore Throat’s legacy remains untinged. And if you’d like to relive a little of those heady times there’s no better place that ‘Who Killed Gumby?’
